PS VR2 could be a game-changer for the PS5.Is there a PS VR2 release date yet?
Sony is yet to provide a release date for PS VR2. While we’ve already heard a great deal about the new device, there’s currently no concrete launch window locked in.
A report from Bloomberg recently claimed Holiday 2022 is the target. If not, then Sony might hold off one more year and allow the PS5 to settle more and wait for more people to be able to pick one up. Thus, Holiday 2023 becomes the next likely contender.
The company will want to make sure the PS5 stock issues are a distant memory, otherwise, they won’t sell as many units as they could. This stock shortage is likely to continue into 2022 but hopefully will end this year too.
An interesting note came from Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants and an expert in the field, who Tweeted: “VR display shipments to rise >50% to >15M in 2022 despite delays to 2023 at Apple and Sony. Big jump forecasted in 2023.”
As we’ve said, there’s no official date, but if this is all accurate, then it would almost certainly mean PS VR2 will release in 2023.

These reports have since been backed up by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who claimed production will ramp up at the tail end of 2022, with a Q1 2023 launch in mind.
Does PlayStation VR2 have a price yet?
It’s impossible to know what the price of PS VR2 will be at this stage. Sony released the original PS VR at $399, so we suspect it will be similar for PlayStation VR2, perhaps a tiny bit more to account for the advanced tech.
What does PS VR2 look like?
On February 22, 2022, the PlayStation Blog finally let potential consumers bear witness to the stunning new piece of technology.
The redesigned headset shares a lot of similarities to the original model, but now the front has a “circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world.” According to Sony, the new headset has also been “inspired by the look of the PS5 family of products,” so gamers are to expect some familiar comfort in certain aspects.
As well as the headset, the actual controllers themselves have probably had the biggest overhaul. The old-school PS3-era Move controller aesthetic has been ditched in favor of a sleek new look. It would be fair to say that they look a lot more like the Oculus controllers, but given how well-liked the Oculus setup is, this isn’t a bad choice.

Here are some other features mentioned by Sony about the PS VR2 headset:
- Added roundness to the PS VR2 headset
- An adjustable headset scope
- A lens adjustment dial
- Its “slimmer” with a slight “weight reduction”
- The headset has a clever new vent for airflow
- On the front and back bands of the PS VR2 headset, there are tons of PS button symbols like on the PS5 DualSense controller
PS VR2 technology and specifications
VR gaming on PC has come on leaps and bounds since PlayStation VR was released on the PS4 in 2016. PS VR2 will need to make several changes to keep up.
Sony has already announced that the PS VR processor will not be returning for PlayStation VR2. Instead, the headset will connect to the PS5 console using USB-C. The company has also confirmed that the new headset will feature a 4K display, thanks to OLED technology improving each eye lens.
The new controllers will borrow features from the DualSense controller, such as adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and better tracking. This will not only improve the experience of PlayStation VR2 but help it feel like a worthwhile companion to the PS5. The new PlayStation VR2 controller will also be called the PlayStation VR Sense, keeping it in line with the DualSense controller on PS5.

What new wonders and immersive worlds can Sony’s newest take on VR offer?Games on PS VR 2
One of the most exciting things about PS VR2 is the improvements over PS VR 1 that will allow more PlayStation users to experience the back catalog of games. We fully expect PlayStation VR2 to bring these titles over, but with quality-of-life adjustments made to each.
With the majority of PS4 games already on PS5, and an Xbox-style Games Pass service in the works, you can bet this will factor into PlayStation VR2 in a meaningful way.
While it’s still early days yet, and plenty more is sure to be revealed in the near future, below is a quick look at every confirmed game for PS VR2:
We also know for certain that original games are a big focus for various PlayStation Studios. “20+ major first-party and third-party titles” have been confirmed for launch and while it’s unclear what the majority are for now, it’s only a matter of time until we find out.
PS5 Pro and PS VR2 rumors
New rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro is in early development. It states that the global chip shortage has already caused Sony to consider a PS5 redesign, opting for more powerful hardware rather than continuing to struggle sourcing existing components.
It’s long been assumed that the chip shortage would hinder Sony’s efforts to produce a mid-gen upgrade for the PS5, however this rumor states that it has instead expedited their efforts. The information comes from YouTube channel RedGamingTech, and claims that Sony intends to release a PS5 Pro by late 2023 or 2024.
The rumor also claims that the upgrade would offer 2.5x the ray tracing performance which would be to make it more compatible with PS VR 2. While this tallies with Sony’s PS5 VR plans, we’d advise everyone to take this information with a spoonful of salt until Sony say otherwise.
